Did you know that AMES is a
Proud and active member of the
State and National MESA network?

That means at AMES, MESA (Mathematics, Engineering, Science Achievement) provides every AMES student opportunities to:

Increase the number of underserved ethnic minority and female students who pursue coursework, advanced study and possible careers in mathematics, engineering and science areas.

Provide a program and activities designed to motivate underserved ethnic minority and female students to take better advantage of all existing educational opportunities.

Facilitate an increase in high school graduation rates of MESA-involved students.

Strengthen the confidence of underserved ethnic minority and female students relating to their success in the mathematics and science courses, and to provide them with skills and opportunities to become successful role models for other students.

Provide underserved ethnic minority and female students the opportunity to relate and associate with successful role models.

Coordinate the efforts of public schools, college and universities, the Utah State Office of Education, industries, development and maintenance of academic support programs to increase the participation of underserved ethnic minority and female students in academic and career pursuits of mathematics and science.

Provide more information about MESA opportunities and participation criteria to parents of minority students and to actively involve minority students’ parents in school activities and programs.

How does AMES promote the MESA philosophy for
all students?

Internships during 11th or 12th grade for all students in areas of career interest.

Field trips including U of U Engineering Day on 10/20/07 and U of U Science Day on 11/10/07 and guest lecturers including prominent professors from the University of Utah, open to all students.

National Science Foundation Mentor Grant recipient.

Advanced Placement (AP) classes for all grade levels, beginning with 9th grade in Social Studies.

University of Utah classes for all students in math, chemistry, physics, and writing.

Future Doctors program at University of Utah School of Medicine each month. AMES provides transportation to the U. Open to all AMES students.

Science Fair opportunities for all grade levels. Recent participants have advanced to Micron International Science Fair.

Honors classes in biology, physics and chemistry for all students.

ACEC (American Council of Engineering Companies) Annual School Supplies Challenge. Students from all grades work with area engineers to design and implement a structure made entirely of school supplies. In 2007 48 AMES students worked with 10 area engineering companies on this project.

ACEC scholarships for 12th grade students interested in engineering. 2007 recipients included a female engineering student.

Female AMES students attended the 2007 Sustainable Building Conference.
